What is BMI?

Body mass index compares your weight with your height. Many public health organizations use it as a simple screening tool because it is quick, inexpensive and easy to compare across large groups of adults. A BMI below 18.5 is commonly described as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or higher as obesity range.

BMI does not measure body fat directly. Athletes, older adults, pregnant people and people with different body compositions may receive a number that does not fully describe their health. Use it as a starting point, then consider waist measurement, fitness, nutrition habits, lab results and professional advice.
